Panthers Dominate on Senior Day

January 31, 2023—On a Tuesday evening here at Hagler Court, the Varsity Girls Basketball celebrated Senior Day with a dominant victory over the De Anza High Dons by the score of 72-15. Prior to the game, the Panthers honored two of their senior players, Kiera Harvell and Ayana Dalessio, for their dedication and commitment to the Girls Basketball program during their four years of high school.

Throughout the evening, the Panthers had a strong and impressive display of defense, forcing the Dons into numerous turnovers that turned in to long scoring for the Panthers. The Panthers got a strong showing from Sophomores Marlee Richard, Khaya Jackson, and Tatianna Wilson; Junior Milan Jackson; and Senior Ayana Dalessio, who all helped propel the Panthers to victory.

The Panthers will travel to take on the Pinole Valley High Spartans this Friday, February 3rd, to wrap up the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7pm.

January 14, 2023—On a Saturday afternoon at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland, the Panthers won their first game in the Bishop O’Dowd MLK Classic by defeating Francis Parker High School of San Diego by the score of 54-51.

It was a tightly contested, back-and-forth affair between the Panthers and the Lancers where both teams would trade off scoring run while also playing tight defense. Nonetheless, the Panthers would ultimately prevail in the 54-51 victory.

The Panthers will look to build off of their first win in the MLK Classic as they return to action on Monday, January 16th, at the Bishop O’Dowd MLK Classic where they will take on the Castro Valley High Trojans. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00PM.

Both Wilson and Thompson combined for 33 of the Panthers.

The Panthers also got a strong contribution from another Sophomore as Khaya Jackson scored 10 points of her own.

The Panthers will look to build off of their impressive win this Friday evening when they take on the St. Patrick-St. Vincent Bruins in a TCAL matchup at Hagler Court. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00pm.

Player Profile: Hailey Vines

By Ryan Painter

January 24th, 2022

hv

This week, I interviewed senior basketball player and track star Hailey Vines.  Hailey is a 4 year varsity basketball player and one of the leaders of the team.  We talked about her time on the basketball team, some of her fondest memories, and her hopes for the season.

Q: How did you get into your sport?

A: When I was in elementary school, I played basketball on the playground all the time. My mom signed me up for a rec league in Hercules and I’ve been playing ever since.

Q: What do you like best about basketball at Saint Mary’s?

A: At Saint Mary’s, I really like the chemistry on the team. For all of my four years now, there has been a really tight bond between the players and coaches and that has made it easier to play and has been a big reason we’ve won so many games.  Our closeness also makes losing a little easier.

Q: What has been the highlight of your Saint Mary’s basketball career thus far?

A: Winning NCS and qualifying for the state championship has definitely been my highlight. Even though we didn’t get to play the state championship game (the Covid pandemic cancelled the game), it was still a great experience.

Q: Do you have a favorite story you could share about one of the coaches or your teammates?

A: One of my favorite moments was when we were playing a team in Sacramento and we were up by 10 points with 2 minutes left. They came back and got up by one and we had 5 seconds to score. Syd passed the ball to Kayla Roseman, and she scored the layup that won the game. She ran down the court, pounding on her chest and it was super fun.

Q: Do you have a pre-game meal or ritual?

A: I don’t really have any meal, but I do form shooting before every game.

Q: What advice would you give to a new player/teammate?

A: Try to soak up as much knowledge as you can about the game. Skill is one thing, but understanding the game and how the team works will make you a much better player. You actually don’t know as much as you think you do, but if you’re willing you can learn a lot from your coaches and teammates.

Q: Any hopes/goals that you have for yourself and for your team this season?

A: For this season, I hope we do well in the playoffs. We have a young team this year, but I think we’re still really good and have the potential to do great in the playoffs.

Player Profile: Anela Thomas

By Noah Zirkle

at

Today I spoke with senior captain of the Girl’s Varsity Basketball team: Anela Thomas. Anela has been hooping her whole life and is one of the best players in the East Bay.  As I found in our conversation, her commitment to herself, her family, and her teammates is why she’s been so successful as a hooper and as an athlete. Anela talked about basketball, Saint Mary’s and her plans for the future in the interview below.

Q: When did you fall in love with basketball?

A: I started playing basketball in first grade. By the time I was in the 2nd grade, I had fallen in love it.  2nd grade is also when I first started playing competitively. Since then, my love for the game has continued to grow.

Q: As athletes, we all rely on people around us for help and support.  Who have been your biggest supporters?  at

A: Definitely my parents. My dad played basketball in high school and could have played in college, but instead chose to play football.  His experience and knowledge of the game and of the world of sports has really impacted me.  My mom was the one who supported me in a different way.  She found teams to play on, was always good at keeping me relaxed and was always someone who supported me no matter what. Also, my grandfather was a big time athlete with many accomplishments, including playing in and winning a Super Bowl championship. His accomplishments were something that has always challenged me as an athlete

Q: What’s been your favorite Panther hoops moment?

A: My sophomore year was not only my favorite hoop moment, but it was also our best season. We went 27-7, won NCS, and made it all the way to the State Championship. That team was like another family to me and definitely a team I will love forever and never forget. All the laughing, crying, conditioning, and hard work is missed but will never be forgotten.

Q: Can you share some of the goals you have for yourself this season?

A: My goals for the season are to play with more confidence, be more of a leader on and off the court, to have fun and to win of course. I want to grow as an athlete and as a person and I want our team to grow together.  We have a lot of new faces on our team and I hope that my the end of my senior year we will have the opportunity to enjoy and share the same types of memories that our state championship team had.

Q: Are you planning on playing basketball after high school?

A: I don’t know yet. I’m hoping to play in college but as of right now I don’t know where. But, I plan to be ready for whatever the future holds.

Foul Trouble Does Panthers In Against Oakland Tech
December 14th, 2021

Berkeley, CA - Tuesday night's home opener against Oakland Tech was suppose to feature each squad's star players in a battle against two top tier East Bay teams.  Instead, several of the Panthers' players were hampered by foul trouble and forced to either sit out much of the game. In the end, several Panthers fouled out.  The result, unfortunately for the home team, was a 56-32 loss.

Speaking after the game, a frustrated coach Chris Toler echoed the assessment.  "Defensively, we were out of position and were not moving our feet as much as we should have.  Then, we would try and recover by reaching.  Give them credit, they made some plays but we have to do a better job of staying disciplined and playing smart basketball."

Coach Toler vowed to have the team ready to play on Saturday against Oakland High School.  That game will also be at Saint Mary's.  The junior varsity squad, a 50-33 winner against Tech, tips off at 5:30 pm while the varsity is scheduled for 7:00.

Girls Varsity Basketball Win Two, Lose One @ Peyo Tip-Off Tournament
December 5th, 2021
Orinda, CA - The girl's varsity basketball team finished 2-1 in the annual Peyo Tip-Off tournament, hosted by Miramonte High School (Orinda). After an opening round win against Las Lomas, the Panthers were defeated 79-53 by Division I power Heritage (Brentwood) despite 22 points from All-Metro guard Anela Thomas.

"Heritage presented some size and match-up problems for us that made it tough," said coach Chris Toler afterwards.  "As the season progresses we'll be better able to handle it.  This early, against a team like that, was much more challenging."

In the third place game, the Panthers took control early, scoring 16 first quarter points and nailing 10 three pointers to secure a 58-45 win against the host Matadors.  Senior Sydney Scott had 3 threes, senior Hailey Vines and freshman Neiyah Thompson made two, while freshman Khaya Jackson, sophomore Milan Jackson, and senior Anela Thomas had one apiece.  The Panthers (2-2) next play on Thursday, December 9th in the Terra Nova Tournament against  Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton).  Tip off is scheduled for 3:45 pm.

Girl’s Varsity Overwhelms Las Lomas in First Round of @ Peyo Tip-Off Tournament

December 2nd, 2021

Orinda, CA – The Girl’s Varsity Basketball team opened their season with a dominant, 42-24 win against Las Lomas (Walnut Creek) in the first round of the Peyo Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by Miramonte High School (Orinda).

After racing out to an 8-1 first quarter lead, the Panthers used the strength and double digit scoring of senior Anela Thomas (10 points), a barrage of second half three pointers from fellow senior Sydney Scott (13 points, 3 threes) and stingy team defense to pull away from Knights and win comfortably.

The Panthers also got solid contributions and scoring output from junior Jada Johnson, sophomore Kendall Campbell, and freshman Marlee Richard.  Senior Hailey Vines was also credited with a good overall floor game.

The Panthers next play Heritage High School (Brentwood) in the 2nd round of the tournament.  Tip-off is scheduled at 6:30 pm.
