Panthers Deal Aces @ TCAL Championships; Sweep All 5 Team Races!

November 7th, 2024

 vbg

Richmond, CA - For the 2nd year in a row, the Saint Mary’s Panthers Boys and Girls Cross Country teams swept captured all five team titles at the TCAL Championships at Point Pinole Regional Park. They are the only school in the history of the league to sweep all five races… and now they’ve done it twice!

“It’s not often that your entire team performs exceptionally well,”  said JV Boys head coach Craig Sutphin after the meet. “So to do it twice in consecutive seasons is pretty special.  Give credit to our teams… they were incredible today.”

jvg JV Girls Lead The Pack

The most competitive race of the meet was the girls varsity. Entering the meet, rival Albany seemed to have a slight edge over the defending champion Panthers. However, championship mettle and winning desire cannot be underestimated. In the 13 year history of the TCAL, only once has the girls varsity team been defeated at the league championships. This 2024 group was well aware of this fact and showed up with their sleeves rolled up and proudly wearing their Panther Pride.

Madi Potter & Caty Ruppert Race To The Podium

Led by senior Madi Potter’s 2nd  place overall finish, the Panthers placed all seven varsity runners on either the 1st or 2nd All-League team en route to eeking out a tight 4 point win. Freshman Caty Ruppert ran the best race of her young Panther career – breaking the vaunted 20 minute mark - finishing in 4th place overall at 19:58.  Senior Lia Sullivan, who’s close to feeling 100% after a nasty respiratory illness, gutted out a 6th place overall finish (20:40) to earn herself yet another All-League award.

jsPoint Pinole All-Time #8 - Javin Schmitt

Sophomore Uma Vella and freshman Olivia Chu finished the scoring for the champions - both earning All-TCAL league honors. Senior Jing Li-Chou, whose season has been cut short by a series of injuries, fought bravely for her 11th place finish while sophomore Sabrina Jackson capped the championship run with a 12th place 21:50 effort.

jvgZoe Jennings, Kamryn Levy & Siena Silberman Race to The Finish

Unlike the Varsity Girls race, the Varsity Boys were completely dominant in their runaway victory over 2nd place Albany and the rest of the league.  All five scoring runners ran their way onto the All-League 1st team - with senior Javin Schmitt and junior Tucker Presnell leading the way. Javin placed second overall at 15:24, which makes him the #8 performer in the history of the TCAL championships. Tucker’s 15:34 makes him the #10 performer all time.

ieSophomore Isabel Eli

Sophomore Djali de Chalus, whose sophomore campaign has been nothing short of spectacular, ran perhaps his finest race of the season.. placing 4th overall with a huge course PR of 15:47.   Seniors Kai Valle and Jacob Demissie both posted solid efforts with their 5th and 6th  place finishes.  The boys team is now state ranked #3 and will be one of the favorites to win the NCS Championship later this month.

F/S Boys Champ Finley Basler

In the JV Boys race, juniors Adrian Hall, Shane Doherty, and Mika Mazin led a 1-2-3 Panther individual sweep while propelling the team to a narrow five point win. Adrian was the overall winner in what some believe maybe a Point Pinole 2 mile course record 10:41. Shane was only a couple steps back at 10:43 while Mika was also not far behind, finishing in 11:00. All three runners earned first team All-League honors.

jvb David DiGirolamo, Zach Potter, & Lucas McAndrew-Kvaerno Finish Strong

Senior Joaquin Tarango also ran a fine race, placing eighth overall while junior Shea Turon closed out the scoring with his lifetime best 11:56 on the league championship course. Senior Jagger Gullov-Singh and junior Nico Echeverria were also commended by the coaches for their solid efforts.

fsb Freshmen Kai Sullivan & Khalil Pearson

The JV girls, who have never lost a TCAL championship, continued their winning ways with a 21 point runaway victory. The fastest runner was freshman Evelyn Bird (14:13), whose improvement over the last month has been “nothing short of spectacular” according to JV girls coach Ariana Corwin. Close behind Evelyn was freshman Jessie Rupert (14:17), followed by senior Katherine Scannell (14:24) and junior Natalie Andress (14:30).

Freshman Zoe Jennings, perhaps the most improved runner on the JV girls team, ran 14:37 to grab the final 1st team all-league slot.  Right behind Zoe was sophomore Kamryn Levy (14:39) and junior Siena Silberman (14:42)… both of whom grabbed all-league medals for their gutsy efforts.

Finally, led by sophomore Finley Basler’s individual win, coach Sutphin’s frosh-soph boys were once again crowned TCAL champions.  Leading the race from start to finish, Finley cruised around the 2 mile course in a PR 11:11. The freshmen duo of Kai Sullivan and Khalil Pearson were not far behind, each separated by a mere one second. Kai got the best of Khalil this time, finishing in 11:18 to Khalil‘s 11:19. Those times earned them 2nd and 3rd  place overall and spots on the All-League team.

jvgl to r: Jessie Ruppert, Katherine Scannell, Evelyn Bird

Sophomores Bruno Middleton and Andrew Bosio each nabbed individual medals… as did Enzo Vargas, Sam Morris, and Elliot Elson.  Coach Sutphin also had high praise for his team’s overall gritty effort and 16 personal bests.

vg Olivia Chu & Lia Sullivan

“I’d say we dealt the league a royal flush today,” said the veteran coach.  “Our athletes laid down the highest cards in the deck and came away with five wins… just like we’d hoped.”

"The Agony of Victory"

For the frosh-soph and junior varsity, the TCAL championships mark the end of their season. For the varsity, they have a little over two weeks to prepare for the North Coast Section Championships to be held at Hayward High School on November 23rd. Individual accolades as well as State Championship invites are on the line at Hayward.  Good luck to all the varsity runners continuing their 2024 championship drive.

Seniors Lead Panthers to Pair of TCAL Championships

October 30th, 2024

jvg

Richmond, CA - For the Saint Mary’s Panthers Cross-Country teams, it was ‘Senior Day’ at Point Pinole Regional Park in their final regular season TCAL league race.  Led by race winners Javin Schmitt and Madi Potter, the day was fittingly dominated by the seniors… as both teams finished the regular season 12-0, thus ensuring each of at least a share of the league championship as they head into next week’s league championship race.

~ See All The Photos From The Meet Here ~

jvb

The Girls Varsity team scored a perfect 15 points in their dominant wins over El Cerrito and John Swett. Senior Madi Potter cruised to a relatively easy win in the girls varsity race. Her 19:56 effort over the rolling 3.0 mile course looked “relatively easy”, according to head coach Denis Mohun.  “As we enter the championship season, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Madi threaten the 19 minute barrier and dip into the 18’s. She’s raced very well the past few weeks and I expect her to get even faster going forward.”

jvb

Fellow senior Lia Sullivan was second in 20:53 while freshman Olivia Chu to not far behind at 20:55. Sophomore Uma Vela, back from a nagging ankle injury, cruised in at 21:40 while senior Katherine Scannell ran one of her better races of the year, finishing fifth in 22:45.

The JV Girls race was also dominated by the Panthers, with 9 of the first 10 places going to Saint Mary’s runners. Leading the way was freshman Caty Ruppert, whose impressive 13:07 was :30 faster than teammate Sabrina Jackson, who cruised in at 13:37.  Senior Jing Li-Chou, having finally overcome a series of nagging injuries, made her 2024 season debut on Wednesday, placing fourth in 14:04. Look for her to figure into the Panthers post season run.

jvg

Freshman Evelyn Bird was next, continuing her ascendent freshman campaign.  Juniors Charlotte Graham and Natalie Andress were next, with the freshmen duo Jessica Ruppert and Zoe Jennings rounding out the sub-15:00 minute group.  Sophomores Kamryn Levy and Sydney Soto also ran inspiring races, Kamryn running more than :30 seconds faster than she ever had while Sydney shaved almost a full minute off of her previous best time!

The Varsity Boys cruised to an easy victory against the Gauchos and the Warriors. The first seven runners that cross the finish line where Panthers, whose state ranking improved this week to #3. The team “was simply tuning up for next week’s league championship race,” according to head coach Jeff Rogers.

vb

Finally, the Boys JV race was perhaps the most impressive of all. Like last week, personal bests were front and center for Coach Sutphin’s squad. 13 of the first 14 finishers were all Panthers, led by talented freshman Khalil Pearson and sophomore Finley Basler.

vb

After them, numerous eye-popping performers wore Panther uniforms… including freshman Scott St. Clair (11:57), teammate Elliot Elson (12:24), Sam Morris (12:29), Reed Hoadley-Wetstone (12:40), and freshmen Lucas McAndrew-Kvaerno (12:59), David DiGirolamo (13:06), and Alex Devine (13:09).

jvg

For many of the Panthers on the Cross Country team, next week’s TCAL championships mark the end of the season. Both Boys and Girls - JV and Varsity - are preparing and seemed to be ready to perform at their best. Come out and support the Panthers next Thursday at Point Pinole, as they race for team championships and individual honors that culminate the 2024 season.

Panthers Go “Full Tilt Boogie” In Quadruple Set of Wins at 2nd TCAL Center Meet

October 24th, 2024

jvb

Richmond, CA - On Thursday, the Panthers were completely dominant in their second Tri County Athletic League (TCAL) meet against Hercules, Vallejo, Jesse Bethel and SPSV -  posting near perfect scores while winning all four Varsity and JV races.   “Our guys ran very aggressively and competed very well today,” said JV Boys head coach Craig Sutphin after the race.  “We didn’t lay back today. Instead we went ‘full tilt boogie’ and it resulted in nearly 20 PR‘s by our guys.”

~ See All The Photos From The Meet Here ~
vg

Indeed, the JV boys team time was nearly 12 seconds per runner faster than they ran just two weeks ago!  Leading the way and continuing his fine freshman campaign was Khalil Pearson, whose 11:47 was a :10 second personal best and :03 seconds better than teammate Simon Murphy, who led for most of the race before being overtaken by Khalil in the final stretch. After Simon, 16 of the next 18 runners were Panthers.

jvb

Andrew Bosio ran a PR 11:53  –  fourteen seconds faster than two weeks ago… while sophomore Bruno Middleton’s 11:58 was a full minute faster than he was a year ago.  After Bruno, Scott St. Clair (12:12), Nico Echeverria (12:29), and Elliot Elson (12:30) were the nest fastest.  Sam Morris, Alex Devine, and Ed Betzig also had notable PR’s for the winners.   As Coach Sutphin remarked, running ‘full tilt boogie’ maybe the key to the Panthers TCAL title hopes in two weeks?

jvb

The JV girls also posted a dominant win in their second outing, running their league record to 9 - 0. Outstanding performers were freshmen Olivia Chu (2nd place, 13:40),  Uma Vela (4th place), freshman Evelyn Bird, who ran 14:43 after running 15:01 two weeks ago, and freshman Zoe Jennings who PR’d by a whopping :32 seconds in her 2nd run on the Point Pinole 2.0 mile course.

jp

According to coach Ariana Corwin,  “The girls are starting to round into shape and it’s starting to show.  It won’t surprise me to see their times drop dramatically at next month’s TCAL championships.”

vg

Both varsity races were resounding wins by the Panthers. Madi Potter and Caty Ruppert ran away from the competition, placing 1st and 2nd respectively in the varsity girls race.  Kai Valle, Ian Kopchik and Shane Doherty did the same in the varsity boys race – running together while placing 1-2-3… all in 16:51.   Both teams scored a perfect 15 points in their dominant wins.

vb

Next up for the Panthers is the final TCAL league meet on Wednesday, October 30th at Point Pinole against El Cerrito, John Swett and J.F. Kennedy.  First race is at 4:00 pm.

Despite Being the Day’s Fastest, Boys Settle for Silver @ Mariner Invitational

October 19th, 2024

 js

Hayward, CA - On Saturday, the Panthers competed in their final invitational meet of the year: the Mariner Invitational.  The Mariner Invitational, while not a statewide competition, features many of the top teams from the Bay Area and around the North Coast Section who want one final chance to size up their opposition while racing on the famed Hayward High School course.  Hayward High is home to next month’s  NCS championship race - which acts as the qualifier to the state championships.  So, the Varsity and Championship races at Mariner were fierce and competitive!

mpMadi Potter Leads the Panthers

Once again, the lead story for the Panthers belonged to the Varsity Boys. Not surprisingly, senior Javin Schmitt and junior Tucker Presnell  were the Panthers’ fastest. Javin finished 7th  overall in the 250 runner race, while Tucker was 9th.  Both earned all-meet honors and each established personal bests on the Hayward course. Javin’s 15:21 is thought to be the 4th  fastest in school history,  while Tucker‘s 15:24 makes him #5 all time.

ipSophomore Isaac Porter

Sophomore Djali de Chalus continued his fine sophomore campaign - just edging under the venerable16 minute mark with his 15:59 effort. Senior Jacob Demissie ran in the #4 spot, finishing in 16:10 with junior Ian Kopchik next in 16:13.   The Panthers total time – 79:09 minutes was the fastest time run by any team on Saturday but championship races, unfortunately, are not decided by time.  The Panthers team score was identical (122 points) to fellow North Coast Section power Dublin, a school six times as big as Saint Mary’s.  So in the end, the Gaels were awarded the victory due to the sixth runner tiebreaker rule. (The team with the highest placing 6th runner wins).

The coaches also called out the efforts of freshman Kai Sullivan (17:12 for 27th  in the frosh-soph boy’s race;  sophomore Isaac Porter who dipped under 18:00 minutes (17:54) for the first time in the boys frosh-soph race; freshman Khalil Pearson who also broke 18 minutes (17:56) and freshman Evelyn Bird whose 2nd race ever had her run 3 miles in order for the frosh-soph girls to have a complete scoring team.  Way to step up for the team Evelyn!

Panthers Post a Trifecta of 2nd Place Finishes Against State’s Best @ Clovis Invitational

October 11th, 2024

 sd

Clovis, CA - On Friday, the Panthers Cross Country team traveled to Clovis (Fresno) to compete in the much-anticipated, much-heralded Clovis Invitational. Clovis attracts most of the top talent from in and around the Golden State and serves for many as a state meet preview.  In short, Clovis allows teams from Northern and Southern California to get a glimpse of each other and to size each other up before heading into the championship season in November.

~ See All the Photos From the Meet Here ~

bjv

For the Panthers boys team, Clovis provided all the aforementioned reasons to want to run well. Facing no less than 10 state rank teams from across division 3, 4 and 5, the #4 state ranked Panthers ran well enough to secure the #2 team finish but fell just short of winning the entire race.

tp

Tucker Presnell & Javin Schmitt

Junior Tucker Presnell led the Panthers, finishing eighth overall amongst the 201 runners… on his way to a PR 15:50 on the famed course. That time ranks Tucker 4th all-time in school history at Woodward Park…site of next month's California State Championships...where he hopes to go much faster.  Senior Javin Schmitt (16:18) had a bit of an off day for him, but still managed a personal best while placing second on the team.

 gv

Freshmen Olivia Chu (l) and Caty Ruppert (r)

Junior Ian Kopchik and sophomore Djali Chalus continued their impressive ascent up the NCS and school record leaderboards with their performances. Ian ran 16:20 while Djali was close behind in 16:23. Both those times are top 10 times in school history and there’s no reason to believe that much faster races are in the future for both of them. Senior Jacob Demissie rounded out the scoring with his 16:38 effort, while senior Kai Valle (16:41) and Brandon Bosio (17:33) comprised the varsity seven at Clovis.  The Panthers posted the 2nd fastest time of all schools who raced on Friday while also posting the fastest time of any North Coast Section school competing at Clovis!

ks

Freshman Kai Sullivan

The girls squad, still battling the nagging team injury bug, put together a team of five runners that competed valiantly and impressively at Clovis. Led by senior Madi Potter and freshman Caty Ruppert, the fivesome showed plenty of grit and determination on their way to a 2nd  place finish behind state ranked Piedmont .

ls

Lia Sullivan (l) and Sabrina Jackson (r)

“I thought the girls ran really well today” said head coach Denis Mohun. “The weather was warm, the race was fast, and we were missing a couple of runners. The girls very easily could have saved it for another day, but instead they came to Clovis ready to run. Now they’ll go home with medals around their neck and a plaque hanging on my classroom wall. Good job to them today.” Freshman Olivia Chu (21:55) was 13th overall, senior Lia Sullivan (22,15) was 20th, and sophomore Sabrina Jackson (23:06) 30th for the Panthers.

vb

Djali de Chalus and Ian Kopchik

mpPanthers Top Finisher Madi Potter

The final race of the day had the Panthers once again running against division 3, 4 and 5 teams in the junior varsity race; and, like the varsity boys and girls before them, the Panthers came away with the runner-up spot. Junior Shane Doherty’s PR 17:08 had him battling for the lead spot over the entire 3.1 race,  before narrowly being out-sprinted at the very end. Shane finished 2nd overall, a scant .3 seconds from victory. Still, his best race of the season led the Panthers,  with fellow juniors Adrian Hall (17:44 – 7th overall) and Mika Mazin (17:46 -  8th) following Shane.  Freshman Kai Sullivan, in his inaugural race at Woodward Park, ran 18:26 to snag himself a medal, while senior Joaquin Tarango (19:13)  completed the scoring for the Panthers. Sophomore Finley Basler and Junior Simone Murphy also competed.

Overall, it was a great day of racing for the Panthers. The Clovis Invitational and the Woodward Park course serve as a barometer for the Panther coaches and runners to gauge themselves… to see how they stack up against their top competition and against themselves.  After Clovis, these 2024 Panthers seem more than ready to take on all comers!  Congratulations to everyone who competed.

No Surprises Here: Panthers Dominate 2024 TCAL Opener

October 9th, 2024

gv

Richmond, CA -  Coming into the TCAL opener at Point Pinole Regional Park, the Saint Mary’s varsity girls Cross Country team had not lost a league race since 2012. However, the rash of injuries and illness afflicting the team as of late threatened to put that streak in serious jeopardy. League rivals, Albany, seemed primed and ready to break the Panthers 12 year streak and give them the inside track to the league championship.  So, tradition, pride, and resiliency are what the Panthers would have to rely on and are, as the Cougars found, are tough attributes to overcome.

~ See All the Photos From The Meet Here ~
jv

Led by seniors Madi Potter and Lia Sullivan… along with freshmen Olivia Chu and Caty Ruppert, the Panthers ran away with a surprisingly easy victory over their crosstown hopefuls.

gjv

“I was really impressed by our girls today,”  said head coach Denis Mohun.  “We figured Albany would be tough; that they would test us in ways we haven’t been tested in some time.  But, our girls rose to the occasion and decided that they didn’t want to be the team that lost the win streak. Good for them. That kind of determination and commitment is what we’re looking for this season.”

 bjv

Like the Varsity Girls, the JV girls also ran to a relatively easy victory over league rivals Albany,  De Anza, Pinole Valley and Salesian. Coach Ariana Corwin‘s group has been practicing hard and steadily improving over the past few weeks and it showed in their TCAL opener. Junior Natalie Andress led the way, placing 2nd overall with a PR 14:27 over the 2.0 mile course.  Her time was :38 seconds faster than she ran a year ago at the league championships.

gjv

Sophomore Reva Schmitt followed close behind (14:30), while a trio of freshmen (Jessica Ruppert, Evelyn Bird, Leni Mora)  completed the scoring for the defending TCAL champions.  Other Notable performances, according to coach Corwin, were posted by juniors Siena Silberman (15:12), Ella Pollard (15:12) and sophomore Kamryn Levy (15:23).

bjv

The highly touted and highly ranked Varsity Boys team had an easy time with their opponents, running a relaxed effort while recording dominant wins over the Cougars, Spartans, Pride and Dons. However, the JV boys had a tight race on their hands, primarily against the  Albany Cougars. Freshman sensation Kai Sullivan won the race with an impressive 11:05 clocking followed by sophomore Finley Basler in 11:12.  Unfortunately, after that, Albany surprised the Panthers with their 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishes  - which secured the win for them. Still impressive performances were turned in by a slew of Panthers, including sophomore Andrew Bosio and freshmen Enzo Vargas and Scott St. Clair.

The Panthers next race will be a varsity competition at Woodward Park in Clovis, the famed site of the California state meet.  The next TCAL league meet is scheduled for Thursday, October 24th at Point Pinole against Vallejo and Hercules.

Panthers Win Everything @ Artichoke; Complete Clean Team Sweeps!

October 5, 2024

 jv

Half Moon Bay, CA -  On Saturday, the Saint Mary’s Boy’s Cross Country teams competed at the Artichoke Invitational hosted by Half Moon Bay High School. The Artichoke Invitational, a Bay Area favorite since 1971, attracts schools from the South Bay, Peninsula and East Bay… who make the trek to Half Moon Bay to take on the challenging 2.33 mile course, which includes jumping over bales of hay and climbing the infamous “Cougar Hill”.  After an entire morning of racing, with over 40 teams entered, the Panthers walked away with a clean sweep of team victories – winning the Frosh/Soph, Junior Varsity and Varsity races.

Leading the way for the varsity was the formidable duo of Javin Schmitt and Tucker Presnell. Like all the other races this season, Javin and Tucker ran side-by-side around the famed course - eventually finishing third and fourth overall.  A mere one second separated the #1 and #3 fastest runners in school history. Not far behind was senior Kai Valle, whose recent training and race performances suggest that this talented senior is someone to watch out for. Following Kai, and landing himself a top 10 finish, was junior Ian Kopchik. Ian‘s rise has been no less than meteoric, according to Coach Ben Turman. “If I were an opposing coach,” said Coach Turman “Ian is certainly somebody who would be grabbing my attention. He might be our difference-maker when it’s all said and done.”

djSophomore Star: Djali de Chalus

Closing out the scoring for the champions were seniors Jacob Demissie and Brandon Bosio, who both overcame slow starts but finished strongly according to the coaches. The final team score (36 - 173) had the Panthers winning by almost 140 points!   In cross country team scoring, that is as dominant a performance as it gets.  It’s also another reminder that this team is certainly one of the best in California!

fb

Sophomore Finley Basler

The Junior Varsity boys race was much closer but the final outcome still the same: a Panther win. The four-point win was led by Junior Mika Mazin, whose debut run on the Artichoke course netted him a  3rd place finish overall . Right behind Mika, and not strangers to success,  were Shane Doherty and Adrian Hall. Running the entire race within a couple strides of each other, Shane edged Adrian at the finish to score the 4th overall place. Adrian wound up 5th… with Adrian posting a time (13:20) that is over a minute faster than last year.  Senior Joaquin Tarango also ran his lifetime best on the the course, finishing almost 20 seconds faster than he ran a year ago, to claim 13th overall and win himself an individual medal. Junior Simon Murphy, hopefully the last member of the team to battle illness this season, ran a brave race and held on to the all-important 5th place scoring position.  His place was just good enough to eek out the team win.  Bear Souza, Jagger Gullov-Singh, and “first time ever running a cross country race” junior Reed Hoadley-Wetstone also ran solid races for the victor

Varsity Boys / JV Boys

Led by overall race winner Djali de Chalus, the frosh/soph boys squeezed out a close eight point victory in their morning race. Djali led for nearly the entire race and eventually ran away with an impressive :36 second win. His time was over a minute faster than he ran a year ago and made him a candidate for Panther runner of the meet.  Teammate Finley Basler was the teams second runner, he too scoring an individual medal with his 19th place overall finish.  Isaac Porter cashed in his best race of the year, also earning an individual medal and was a crucial placer in the team’s overall score, according to the coaches.  Bruno Middleton and Andrew Bosio ran very gutsy last half miles, passing several runners along the way, which eventually clinched the victory for the upstarts.

fbKhalil Pearson and Kai Sullivan Lead The Way

Earlier in the morning, the freshman boys fielded a team that ran in the “freshman only” race. Kai Sullivan, whose been the top 9th grader all year, was an individual medalist here - placing sixth overall.  Teammate Khalil Pearson also grabbed himself a medal for his efforts, running 14:08 and placing 14th overall. Other notable performers were Enzo Vargas, Damon O’Connor and Scott St. Clair – who despite still feeling the effects of walking pneumonia – ran a valiant, tough race in his first start for the Panthers.

Panthers Place 2nd @ Mighty Woodbridge Invitational;

School’s All-Time Record Book Completely Re-Written!

September 21st, 2024

 wb

Irvine, CA - In Southern California on Friday night, more than 120 teams racing in 4 different varsity races lined up at the 43rd annual Woodbridge Cross Country Invitational.  Sponsored by ASICS,  Woodbridge draws much of the top running talent in California and from across the western U.S.  Teams come to Woodbridge hoping that the thousands of spectators, formidable competition, and carnival-like atmosphere will translate into blazing fast times.  For the Saint Mary’s Panthers, Woodbridge checked every box, met all expectations and would be the meet where the entire school record board was re-written.

js

New School Record Holder Javin Schmitt

The Boy’s Varsity team, led once again by the dynamic duo of Javin Schmitt and Tucker Presnell, finished 2nd overall while racing to  the #1, #3, #6, #7, #9 and #11 three mile times in school history.  Their team time - 75:55  or 15:11 average per runner- obliterated the previous fastest team time in school history and makes this group the fastest team in school history “by a ton” according to head coach Jeff Rogers.

 kv

Kai Valle

Senior Javin Schmitt was not only the fastest Panther of the day and the 8th fastest among the more than 700 varsity runners on Friday night, but his 14:45 also broke the school record previously held by current Cal Poly SLO great Mateo Malko-Allen.  Teammate Tucker Presnell also sliced more than a minute off his previous 3 mile best, dipping under the venerable 15:00 mark while finishing in 14:57.  Tucker is now the 3rd fastest in school history and the fastest junior to ever run in a Panther uniform.

Senior Kai Valle, one of two current Panthers who ran at Woodbridge back in 2022, torched his PR with his gutsy 15:19 effort.  His time was a :45 second personal best and now ranks him #6 on the school’s all-time list.   Junior Ian Kopchik, now fully recovered from a nasty early season cold, delved deep into his competitive spirit to blaze a massive 15:24… which vaults him to #7 all-time.  Ian’s run typified the Panthers effort on Friday: gutsy, tough, but not surprising.

jd

Jacob Demissie

Following Ian was fast-rising sophomore talent Djali de Chalus.  Entering  Woodbridge with a 3.0 mile PR of 17:23, Djali proved that hard-work and commitment pay off by ripping off a huge 15:28 - which placed 5th on the team, makes him the #9 Panther ever, and gives him bragging rights as the fastest sophomore in school history.

 ab

Adrian Hall & Brandon Bosio

Senior Jacob Demissie and Brandon Bosio both established new lifetime bests as well, Jacob shaving :04 seconds off his previous time while Brandon bested his PR by :19 seconds.  Jacob finished in 15:36 (#11 all-time) – Brandon in 16:13.  Junior Adrian Hall ran much of the race with Brandon and also had a major breakthrough, lowering his lifetime best from 17:31 to 16:18.

Madi Potter & Lia Sullivan

The Girl’s Varsity team, meanwhile, reminded everyone that every runner and every point counts in cross country team scoring.  The team finished their race tied for 8th, ONE point from 7th, TWO points from 6th and NINE points from 5th.  This in a race that featured 172 runners where passing just one runner equals that much needed point.

Running against perennial NCS  powerhouses Campolindo, Maria Carillo, Bishop O’Dowd and Miramonte… as well as out of the area talent like Willow Glen (San Jose) and Mission Viejo (So Cal)… the varsity boys ran a valiant, gutsy race while placing 2nd.  , right behind #1 NCS ranked Miramonte.  Tucker Presnell led for much of the race and placed 2nd overall in 10:19.  Teammate Javin Schmitt was not far behind, he too running a courageously tough race, placed 4th at 10:26.  Seniors Kai Valle (10:48) and Jacob Demissie (10:59) ran considerably faster than they did last year finished 14th and 17th respectively.  Junior Ian Kopchik, who battled illness all week long, stepped up big as the 5th scoring runner – placing 26th while running 11:15.  Junior Adrian Hall (11:20) and senior Brandon Bosio (11:24) packed well and ran right behind Ian.  The Panthers overall team time was the fastest ever recorded by a Panther squad at Ed Sias.

Boys Are Blazing Fast @ 26th Annual Time Trial

September 9th, 2024

vbTucker Presnell and Javin Schmitt Lead The Pack

Berkeley, CA – It was no surprise that the boys varsity cross country team – last year’s 6th place finishers at the California State Championships – ran fast at the 26th annual team time trial at Tilden Park in Berkeley.  But it was HOW fast they ran that got both coaches and athletes buzzing about the season and it’s possibilities.

~Click Here To See The All-Time Time Trial List~

For junior Tucker Presnell and senior Javin Schmitt, the summer has been spent running, recovering and running some more.  Their commitment has fueled a team wide commitment that has spawned heightened expectations, big dreams and now very fast times.  lsSenior Lia Sullivan

On Monday, no one was surprised that both Tucker and Javin ran scorching fast time times, but 9:49 and 9:53 amounted to the 1st and 3rd fastest times ever run… in the history of the school!  Only the legendary likes of current Cal Poly SLO star Mateo Malko-Allen and former Brown University captain Matt Duffy broke the venerable 10:00 minute mark and each of them also have state championship medals in their trophy cases.

Djali de Chalus & Ian Kopchik

“Both Tucker and Javin are in great shape but more importantly both have this passion… this drive and this inner fire for running that burns deep inside them,” said coach Jeff Rogers afterwards.  “They don’t need to be motivated, cajoled or convinced to show up and work hard. They’ve both graduated into the world of passion – which has been the key to their success.  Look for them both to have big seasons.”

Also deserving a lot of praise from the coaching  were the senior duo of Kai Valle and Jacob Demissie.  Kai, whose summer training has been choppy and a bit inconsistent, still managed to grind out a very quick 10:20 which places him as the #8 senior performer of all time. Jacob, whose summer has been very steady and consistent, was not far behind in 10:25. His time was :19 seconds faster than a year ago and suggests that he is also ready for a breakout senior season.

Another eye opener was sophomore Djali de Chalus, who put everyone on high alert that he may someday have something to say about being the school’s fastest of all time.  Djali smoked a 10:31 on the rolling, hilly 1.9 mile course… which as a sophomore has only been exceeded by the aforementioned Matt Duffy.  His improvement was more than a minute and a half faster than a year ago.

ksFreshman All-Time #2 Kai Sullivan

Junior teammates Ian Kopchik, Adrian Hall and Mika Mazin also made their presence felt on Monday… each running list-making fast times.   Ian is now the #7 junior in school history with his impressive 10:33.   Adrian’s 10:44 was not far behind and puts him in the top 12 all-time… while Mika’s 10:55  was a whopping 2:26 faster than a year ago!

Finally, a pair of freshman – Kai Sullivan and Khalil Pearson – were able to crack the top ten all-time list.  Kai ran 11:21, making him the #2 freshman of all-time.. behind only Matt Duffy.  Khalil, meanwhile, earned himself a Top 10 All-Time t-shirt with his 12:10… which makes him the #9 freshman performer ever.

Other top performances on the boy’s side came from freshmen Enzo Vargas (12:39) and Elliot Elson (12:47), sophomore Finley Basler (11:32), and seniors Brandon Bosio (10:59) and Jagger Gullov-Singh (12:34).

cc

For the girls, top times were run by senior captain Lia Sullivan and Madi Potter.  Lia ran almost :40 seconds faster than a year ago… finishing in 13:05 and as the #8 senior performer ever.  Madi, only a few steps back, ran 13:14 to vault herself to the #12 position on the all-time senior girls list.  Both Lia and Madi paced  sophomores Sabrina Jackson and Uma Vela… whose 13:44 and 13:51 put them at #11 and #12 respectively on the all-time sophomore list.

Freshman Caty Ruppert was the 5th girl in at 14:19 (12th all-time freshman), while sophomore Reva Schmitt made the all-time sophomore list with her 14:29 finish.  Senior Katherine Scannell also ran a lifetime best – breaking the 15:00 barrier while finishing in 14:56.

cc

“Overall, the time trial is a nice way to finish off the summer and usher in the official start to the season,” noted girl’s JV coach Ariana Corwin.  “Now we can see exactly where we are and how we need to progress and improve going forward.  We always hope the time trial not only excites but inspires our runners to keep working and keep improving.”  This Saturday the team officially opens the season at the Ed Sias Invitational at Hidden Valley Park in Martinez, where excitement, inspiration and improvement will certainly be on display.  Good luck to all the Panthers competing on Saturday!

Goals Are Lofty, Expectations High For 2024 Panthers

August 12th, 2024

vbKai Valle, Javin Schmitt, Jacob Demissie, Tucker Presnell

Berkeley, CA - Both the Saint Mary’s boys and girls  cross country teams head into the 2024 season with the goal of building on the success they had in 2023 and to make some noise in this 2024 championship season.

“Our goals never change,” girls head coach Denis Mohun said.  “We want to be sure that we prepare, support, and dedicate ourselves everyday… to try to be the best runners we can.  If we control what we can control, I’m sure the times and places will add up.”

vg Uma Vela, Sabrina Jackson, Lia Sullivan

On paper, the headliners this year seem to be the varsity boys squad.  Returning 6 of their top 7 runners from a team that placed 6th at the State Championships a year ago, these Panthers are talented, hungry, and deep.  Senior Javin Schmitt, whose currently 5th on the school’s all-time 3.0 mile list, should be amongst the few runners battling for an individual medal at the NCS Championships in November.  Junior Tucker Presnell,  whose summer has been “outstanding” according to the coaches, will be one of the top runners in the TCAL and also be a strong contender for an NCS medal.

tpJunior Tucker Presnell

Senior Jacob Demissie, ranked #9 in school history with his 15:40 PR over 3.0 miles, will also figure prominently in big races… as will teammate Kai Valle, whose 2:02/4:30 PR’s in the 800 and 1600 meters this past spring suggest he’ll be a force for all to reckon with.  After that, look for Brandon Bosio to have a solid senior season… with juniors Shane Doherty, Ian Kopchik, Adrian Hall, and Mika Mazin all in tow.  Add to the mix senior Joaquin Tarango and fast-rising sophomores Djali de Chalus and Finley Basler and this 2024 Panthers squad seems primed to make a big, deep post-season run.

vbJunior Ian Kopchik & Sophomore Djali de Chalus

Having won all but one league championship since the inception of the TCAL in 2012, the girl’s team is not un-familiar with success.  The past three seasons, the team has been either 1st or 2nd at the NCS Championships and the hope is that this season will follow suit.  Led by seniors Jing Li-Chou (ranked 12th all-time in school history), Lia Sullivan (1st team all-league in 2023), and Madi Potter (2nd team all-league in 2023), this group is experienced, talented and ready to compete. Backing up the three senior leaders will be up-and-coming sophomores Sabrina Jackson and Uma Vela… both of whom competed at the NCS and State Championships as freshmen a year ago.  Senior Katherine Scannell has had an excellent summer and will be called upon to contribute, as will sophomore Reva Schmitt who will make her varsity debut in 2024.

The season begins with the 26th annual team time trial on September 9th before a trio of invitationals (Ed Sias, Woodbridge, Artichoke) propel the team into early October when the TCAl season kicks off.  After opening against cross-town rival Albany, the Panthers travel to Clovis and Hayward for two more invitational meets before closing out the regular TCAL season.  November is championship season, with league, section and state championship competitions all part of the goals and aspirations of these 2024 Panthers.
