Panthers Lose In Semifinals for Doubles, Advance to Championships for Singles TCAL Championship
November 5, 2024—Saint Mary's entered TCAL Championships with two doubles team and two singles members competing today. Our doubles team would win in the quarterfinals, but would encounter the league champs in the semifinals. With a hard fought match, the Panthers would be eliminated 3-10 by both Albany doubles team.
Our singles (Hannah and Paula) would also make semifinals and would find Paula Devine come through in the semifinals to advance to Championship Singles match tomorrow.
Panther prepare now for NCS which starts November 14th. Saint Mary's finish the season with an 11-3 regular season record.
Panthers Win Regular Season Finale vs. Spartans, 5-2
October 30, 2024—In the final regular season matchup of the 2024 campaign, the Varsity Girl’s Tennis team traveled to Pinole to take on the Pinole Valley Spartans, where the Panthers would ultimately win the matchup by the score of 5-2. This victory marks the team’s fourth victory in their last five matches.
Not only is the fourth victory in the last five matches, but the victory also gives the Panthers their 11th victory of the season, finishing the regular season with an overall record of 11-3.
The Panthers will now look to continue their hot streak as they will compete in the Tri County Athletic League (TCAL) Championship Tournament with hopes of bringing back a league title to Peralta Park.
Panthers Defeat Spartans for 10th Win of the Year
October 23, 2024—With only three games left in the regular season, the Varsity Girl’s Tennis team are looking to finish it out on a winning note before the Tri County Athletic League (TCAL) Championship Events. In fact, the Panthers would begin that goal on a very solid note as they would defeat the Pinole Valley Spartans by the score of 5-1.
The Panthers would dominate most of the day as they would win all four singles matches, and even the first doubles team of Sophomores, Yenna Lee and Naomi Scheele, would also prove to be too much for the doubles team of the Spartans. The Panthers now improve their overall record to 10-2.
With two games left in what has been an amazing season for the Panthers, they will look to win out the rest of the way, starting with their next match tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Vallejo, California, to take on the Jesse Bethel Jaguars. The match is set for 3:30pm.
Panthers Earn “Bagel” Victory over RedHawks on Senior Day
October 17, 2024—On a gorgeous afternoon at the Albany Courts, the Varsity Girl’s Tennis team played host to the Vallejo RedHawks, which would be the Panthers final home match of the 2024 campaign. In the spirit of that, the team would also celebrate Senior Day prior to the match where they honored senior, Madeleine Nadel, for her years of hard work, dedication, and commitment to the tennis program.
Following the Senior Day festivities, it would be all Panthers throughout the match as they would ultimately “bagel” the RedHawks by the score of 7-0, getting strong performances by aforementioned senior, Madeleine Nadel; Junior, Makena Lai; Sophomores Yenna Lee, Naomi Scheele & Hannah Zedwu; and Freshman, Willa Murphy, to earn the victory. The Panthers are now 9-2 on the year.
The Panthers will now prepare for their next league matchup against the Pinole Valley Spartans, which is scheduled for Wednesday, October 23rd, at Pinole Valley High School. The match is set for 3:30pm.
Panthers Beat Jaguars for 5th Win of the Season
September 24, 2024—On a warm afternoon in Vallejo, California, the Varsity Girl’s Team took on the Jesse Bethel Jaguars in their second straight road match where they would defeat the Jaguars by the score of 5-2, improving the Panthers to 5-1 on the season.
The Panthers were phenomenal in all their singles and doubles matches, winning four singles matches and one doubles match. However, it would be Senior, Madeline Nadel, and Sophomore, Makena Lai, who would steal the afternoon in their respective singles matches as they had no issues handling their opponents, propelling the Panthers to victory.
The Panthers will now prepare for Thursday’s match at El Cerrito High School when they travel to take on the Gauchos in a non-league bout. The match is scheduled for 3:30pm.
Panthers Top Redhawks to Improve to 4-1 On the Year
September 17, 2024—On chilly and cloudy Tuesday afternoon, the Varsity Girl’s Tennis team traveled to Vallejo, California, to take on the Vallejo High Redhawks in yet another Tri County Athletic League (TCAL) showdown, and yet another opportunity to stay as one of the top teams in the TCAL standings. In fact, the Panthers would not disappoint as they would defeat the Redhawks by the score of 5-1.
The key players for the Panthers would be Sophomores, Paula Devine and Hannah Zewdu, and Junior, Makena Lai, as they would earn victories in their respective matches.
With the victory, the Panthers move to 4-1 on the season, and will now turn their attention to next Tuesday’s TCAL match against the Jesse Bethel Jaguars where the Panthers will look to add their fifth win of the year. The match is set for 3:30pm in Vallejo.
Panthers Win Another Closely Contested Match; Improve to 2-0.
September 5, 2024—In their second straight road match to open their season, the Varsity Girls Tennis team traveled to Richmond to take on their longtime rival, the Salesian Pride, and come away with another close victory by the score of 4-3.
The Panthers would sweep the number one, two, and three singles matches; and notch their fourth victory in the number one doubles match to clinch their second straight victory over the Pride and improve to 2-0 record. Even though it is only two matches into this very young season, these close victories have showcased the mental toughness and fortitude of this team to find ways to win these tight matchups.
The Panthers will now have a couple days off until they resume on Tuesday, September 10th, when they take on yet another longtime rival, the Albany High Cougars, at the Albany Courts, looking to improve to 3-0 on the year. The match is set for 3:30pm.
Panthers Win League Thriller to Kick Off 2024 Campaign
September 3, 2024—In their first matchup of their 2024 campaign, the Varsity Girl’s Tennis Team defeated long time Tri County Athletic League Rival (TCAL), the El Cerrito High Gauchos, by the score of 4-3 in what was thrilling and competitive season opening match.
The Panthers received a large contribution throughout their entire roster. The doubles team of Senior, Else Boardman, and Freshman, Willa Murphy, looked to be a fantastic duo in the making as they would win their respective match in dominant fashion by the scores of 6-1 and 6-2. The Panthers’ other doubles duo of Sophomores, Yenna Lee and Naomi Scheele, would also prove to be dominant as they would shutout their opponents in consecutive sets by the score of 6-0, 6-0.
In the singles matchup involving Panthers Sophomore, Hannah Zewdu, would also be dominant one for Zewdu as she would win her match by the scores of 6-1 and 6-2. The other singles of Sophomore, Paula Devine; Junior, Makena Lai; and Senior, Madeline Nadel, were all competitive matchups as well that also helped the Panthers to victory.
The Panthers will look to notch their second win of the season when they take on another longtime rival in the Salesian Pride. The match is set for Thursday, September 5th, at 3:30pm.
